OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME : - Strengthening the existing system of communicable diseases surveillance and epidemic preparedness and response. - Planning and monitoring the implementation of different preventive and control activities related to communicable diseases. - Building the national capacity dealing with communicable diseases prevention and control programs. - Strengthening and maintaining the early warning system for epidemic-prone diseases.

Description of duties: - Provide advice and technical support to the Health Directorate in North Darfur in designing, developing, monitoring and coordinating an effective national program on disease surveillance. - Prepare program reports and statistical data on activities pertinent to communicable disease surveillance. - Develop, strengthen and maintain an early warning system for epidemic-prone disease. - Under guidance of the Communicable Diseases Unit in Khartoum, assist in developing strategies and action plans to implement national, provincial and district surveillance activities, monitoring and evaluation activities aiming at improving surveillance and control of vaccine preventable diseases. - Conduct and collaborate in designing training programs and workshops related to different program activities. - Support the Health Directorate, North Darfur, in outbreak investigations. - Advocate, promote and collaborate activities with UN agencies operating in North Darfur in communicable disease surveillance and control. - Coordinate the technical/administrative activities related to the WHO response to public health emergencies of international concern. Collaborate with the Head Office in Khartoum on health participations in the area of related epidemiological activities. - Monitor and follow up on epidemiological situation in North Darfur recognizing the potential/real impact on neighboring states/regions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS |
Education: Essential: Recognized university degree in health related field and post graduate degree in public health/epidemiology.
Desirable: Additional post-graduate training courses in advanced epidemiology and biostatistics.

Skills: - Knowledge and skills in applied epidemiology and public health. - Ability to process, analyze and interpret epidemiological surveillance data. - Effective presentation and writing skills. - Knowledge and competencies in systematic event detection, outbreak investigation and outbreak response. - Familiarity with health problems in the Region. - Ability to use epidemiological and statistical software would be an asset. - Computer literacy: word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software. - Excellent interpersonal skills. - Cultural sensitivity and ability to work in multi-cultural environment.

Experience: Essential: At least 7 years of national / international experience in epidemiological surveillance, managing disease outbreaks and other public health events/emergencies with considerable experience in public health.
Desirable: Related UN or major NGO experience with the responsibility for program delivery in a developing country would be an asset.

Languages: Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of Arabic would be an asset.
